Is Viasat Good for Disney+ Streaming?

Before you sign up for a Disney+ plan, which currently range from $10 to $20 per month, on top of your Viasat bill, check your Viasat plan parameters in the app to see what your maximum download speed “up to” number is, and also how much Priority Data you have. Download speeds and Priority data limits will play a role in your decision to stream Disney+.

Ideally, your Viasat plan will offer download speeds of at least 25 Mbps or better. These tend to the middle- to high-end Viasat plans. While you can stream at slower speeds it might not be as enjoyable as streaming at download speeds of at least 25 Mbps.

You also will want those middle to high-end plans because of the Priority Data volumes they offer. These are expressed in Gigabytes, or GB, and each plan has a set amount. Priority data is data that downloads at the higher Mbps levels. Once you use up your Priority Data allocation for the billing period your speed is reduced to 1 Mbps to 3 Mbps at which point your speed isn’t ideal for streaming video content.

Depending on how important Disney content is (two of the Disney Bundle plans include EPSN+) you can decide if your internet speeds with Viasat will support a good experience and whether this is a service you want to add. Any plan offering up to 25 Mbps of download speed or above should serve you well.

The higher your download speeds the better your resolution can be for the content; in other words, you’ll be able to handle HD and Ultra HD better if you have download speeds that are higher, and, if you have a healthy amount of Priority data available.

Viasat plans have a Priority Data soft cap allotment. This means that as you stream online and use up data, your Priority data cap is being used. Once you exceed that amount then your download speeds drop to 1 Mbps – 3 Mbps, at which point, streaming would be difficult. Consider how much data each type of streaming uses.

As stated, if your plan speed is at least 25 Mbps download speed, then you should be able to stream Disney+ on Viasat. This means your plan would be the Unlimited Silver 25 plan or above. Unlimited Silver is $70 for the first three months and goes to $100 per month thereafter for the balance of your 2-year contract. (Pricing here doesn’t include taxes and fees.) Unlimited Silver comes with a Priority Data limit of 60 GB. The Unlimited Gold 30 starts at $100 per month and goes up to $150 per month after three months. It has download speeds of up to 30 Mbps and has a Priority Data limit of 100 GB. The Unlimited Gold 50 Plan starts at $150 per month and goes up to $200 per month after three months. It offers download speeds of up to 50 Mbps and comes with 200 GB or priority data. The Unlimited Platinum 100 plan starts at 150 per month going up to $200 after three months. It comes with download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and has a Priority data limit of 300 GB.

Some rural and remote locations have a limited selection of plans.

How much data would you use? Using 10 GB of data as a measurement, per device, streaming a video (TV show or film) in SD Standard Definition uses 500 MB per hour so on 10 GB of data you can stream about 20 hours of SD video for the month. If you stream video content in HD it uses about 2 GB per hour so you’d use up 10 GB of data after 5 hours. Streaming in 4k uses 8GB per hour so you’d get just over an hour of streaming in 4K on 10 GB of data. You can adjust your resolution settings in the platform.

Viasat plans with at least 25 Mbps of download speed should offer a good Disney+ streaming experience. The Viasat App offers tips on how to use data judiciously, and even save data use in simple ways, as well as billing and payment information. If Disney+ is appealing and your speeds can handle it then enjoy.
