Is 30 Mbps Good for 4 Devices?

That depends on whether all four of your devices will be online at the same time and what specifically they will be doing. Generally, satellite internet speeds of 30 Mbps will let you download smaller files, stream a live event, surf and shop. However, you likely won’t be able to stream HD content on all four devices at the same time or do four Zoom calls at once with cameras on without experiencing buffering. If three out of four devices are not downloading big files, being used for a web conference with camera turned on, or streaming HD content while one device is doing any of the above, yes, you should be good to go under normal conditions.

The FCC definition of high-speed internet is currently a bit more stringent than the requirement for “broadband” internet. Broadband is defined as 25 Mbps download speed and 3 Mbps upload speed. Per this definition, broadband internet can be provided by cable, satellite, wireless internet or fiber-optic technology.

High-speed internet is currently defined as anything higher than 25 Mbps but there is movement underfoot for the FCC to tighten that definition to include a much higher minimum download speed. Download speeds of 30 Mbps currently qualify as high-speed.

Connections above 10 Mbps are adequate for family use but let’s dive into specifics. Speeds of 5-25 Mbps download will support one or two devices being online for web browsing, email, social media, streaming at Standard display video, perhaps at HD or 4K levels, and streaming music.

Speeds of 25-50 Mbps will support one, two, or three people online at once for streaming in HD and 4K video, as well as streaming music, and light work from home. A video call or live meeting on Facebook uses more data if video is on. This could cause buffering. For such meetings you may want to plan for others to use less bandwidth during this timeframe.

Internet speeds of 50-100 Mbps will support up to four devices being online at once and can handle streaming 4K video, working from home, using home security cameras and surfing. Speeds of 100-500 Mbps will handle up to five users at home doing everything from streaming 4K video to running a home office and using your security cameras.

Be aware that home security cameras consume internet data and use more data when activated by movement.
