Is 100 Mbps Good for Working from Home?

With upload speeds of 50-100 Mbps you can work from home provided those speeds are sustained and relatively consistent. A big factor here is the number of devices that will be online at your home while you are working. A typical home has seven or eight devices using the internet at the same time if we include smart phones and printers. All of them use bandwidth so whenever possible limit those devices while you are working to give you more power for working online.

In general, internet speeds of 50-100 Mbps are considered good. With 100 Mbps you can have two people using a couple of devices each to stream music and also work from home.

The single most bandwidth-consuming activity most people do in their workday is to attend video calls. Video Conferencing is ubiquitous now and you need speeds of 50-100 Mbps to be on a call with your camera on and not see the buffering wheel or otherwise have interruptions. A typical call uses 1 GB per hour if you have your camera turned on. More people with more cameras uses more data. If you notice that your internet speed isn’t keeping up during a call, you can (if etiquette allows) turn your camera off. This reduces your data use by about 30%. Try to share your screen only when necessary or use cloud-based collaborative documents instead. Mute your audio when you’re not talking.

Typically, people may be on a video call, or performing a work task, and let’s admit it, also checking social media or news periodically on their phone. This shouldn’t be a problem at speeds of 100 Mbps.
