Can I replace my Viasat modem?

Ask Viasat to diagnose the fault and authorize a compatible replacement. A satellite modem is different from a Wi-Fi router: buying a retail cable modem or connecting a different router does not replace the Viasat satellite connection.

Start with the symptom

Check whether the problem affects every device or just one room. A weak Wi-Fi signal can be a home-network issue rather than a failed satellite modem. Note the modem's lights, any error message, when the problem began and whether a wired device also loses service.

Follow Viasat's model-specific reboot instructions or the reboot option in My Viasat. Restarting is different from a factory reset. Do not erase settings, change dish alignment or install unofficial firmware while troubleshooting.

Arrange replacement through Viasat

Contact customer support using the information on your bill or in your account. Ask whether diagnostics show a hardware fault, whether a replacement is covered by your lease or warranty, whether shipping or a service visit costs extra and how the replacement will be activated.

Compatibility and activation depend on the satellite system serving your address. Do not assume a used modem can be activated on your account. If Viasat sends a replacement, use the instructions supplied with that equipment; ask for a technician if the work involves the outdoor dish or an installation you cannot safely complete.

A separate router serves a different purpose

A router or mesh system can improve local Wi-Fi coverage, but it still needs the working satellite modem and connection. Ask Viasat how your router should connect to your specific gateway. Confirm any bridge-mode settings with support before changing them.

Plan changes and equipment costs

The current residential lineup includes Essentials, Unleashed and Unleashed Max. The current advertised equipment lease is $15 per month; older accounts can have different equipment arrangements. Check the total price and your own agreement before accepting a replacement or upgrade.

RSINC's download commitment for eligible orders is at least 80 Mbps. Uploads can reach 3–5 Mbps, but that range is not a guaranteed minimum. A new router does not itself change your satellite plan or guarantee faster service.

Read Viasat plans and prices, how Viasat satellite internet works and what ViaSat-3 F2 means for customers.

Keep track of returned equipment

Ask exactly which old components must be returned and by what deadline. A replacement or upgrade can have different return instructions from a canceled account. Use the supplied kit, save the shipping receipt and check that the return is credited. For cancellation, Viasat's equipment-return window is 30 calendar days after disconnection.
