Test your internet speed

Check how your connection is performing right now. The test measures the speed and responsiveness between your device and a nearby test server.

This test is provided by Measurement Lab (M-Lab). Before the test begins, M-Lab asks you to accept its data policy, which explains how test data and IP addresses are retained and published.

Get a more useful result

A speed test is a snapshot. Set up the test carefully so the result better reflects your connection.

  • 1.Pause streaming, downloads, cloud backups, and software updates on other devices.
  • 2.For a Wi-Fi test, stay near your router. For the clearest baseline, connect with Ethernet when possible.
  • 3.Run the test more than once, including during the evening when your household normally uses the internet most.

What the numbers mean

Download speed
How quickly your device receives data. It affects streaming, browsing, and downloading files.
Upload speed
How quickly your device sends data. It matters for video calls, backups, and sharing large files.
Latency
How long data takes to make a round trip. Lower latency helps calls, gaming, and other real-time activity feel responsive.

Are your speeds consistently falling short?

Compare your results with the speed included in your plan. If repeated tests remain low after restarting your equipment and checking Wi-Fi, contact your provider or explore other services available near you.

Internet speed test questions

Why is my result lower than my plan's advertised speed?

Wi-Fi distance, older equipment, busy devices, network congestion, VPN use, and the selected test server can all affect a result. Providers also commonly describe plans with maximum “up to” speeds.

Should I test with Wi-Fi or Ethernet?

Use both when you can. Ethernet helps show what reaches the router, while Wi-Fi shows the experience on the device and in the room where you normally use it.

When should I contact my provider?

Contact your provider when repeated wired tests are well below your plan speed, service drops often, or restarting the modem and router does not resolve the problem. Save the time and result of each test before calling.
