What Is Wi-Fi 8? GFiber's 20 Gig Gateway and When Routers Reach Homes

Wi-Fi 8 is the next major Wi-Fi generation, based on the developing IEEE 802.11bn standard. Its main goal is more reliable and responsive service in busy networks, rather than another large jump in advertised peak speed. GFiber, Qualcomm and Gemtek have already shown a Wi-Fi 8 gateway for GFiber's 20 Gig service, while TP-Link has opened regional preorders for an early Wi-Fi 8 router.

What Wi-Fi 8 changes

IEEE calls the 802.11bn project Ultra High Reliability. Qualcomm says the new generation is designed to improve mesh networking, spectrum efficiency, responsiveness under load and resilience when many devices share a network. The IEEE working group's current timeline predicts final approval in March 2028, so products sold before then are based on draft versions of the standard.

That focus matters because a router's combined laboratory rating does not equal the speed one phone or laptop receives. Wi-Fi 8 equipment is intended to keep connections steadier across distance, interference and crowded networks.

GFiber's Wi-Fi 8 Premium Gateway

On October 12, 2026, GFiber, Qualcomm and Gemtek announced an AI-native Wi-Fi 8 Premium Gateway for GFiber's symmetrical 20 Gig service. It uses Qualcomm's Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite platform, includes a local AI processor and has an interactive screen for network controls and guest access.

GFiber says its existing 20 Gig customers will be first to receive the gateway after certification. The companies have not announced a public delivery date. GFiber's separate 20 Gig early-access plan remains $250 a month for selected customers in limited areas. The gateway hardware is also intended to support future 50 Gig service, and GFiber plans a residential 50G PON trial in spring 2027.

When Wi-Fi 8 routers reach U.S. homes

TP-Link opened preorders for its Archer 8 Ultra on September 30, 2026 in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Canada and other selected regions. The company says other regions and pricing will be announced later. As of October 20, TP-Link had not announced a U.S. price or launch date.

The Archer 8 Ultra is rated at up to 19 Gbps combined across its three wireless bands. TP-Link says it remains compatible with older Wi-Fi devices, although clients built for Wi-Fi 8 are needed to use every new feature.

Should you wait for Wi-Fi 8?

Most households do not need to wait. Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6E routers already support common gigabit and multi-gig internet plans, and Wi-Fi 8 certification and broad U.S. availability are still ahead. Waiting makes more sense if your current equipment works well and you prefer to buy after the standard and product choices mature.

If your router already struggles with coverage or many connected devices, replacing it now may help. Our guides explain where to place a router, when to replace one and which internet providers include Wi-Fi 7 equipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is Wi-Fi 8?

Wi-Fi 8 is the next major Wi-Fi generation, based on the developing IEEE 802.11bn Ultra High Reliability standard. It emphasizes reliability, responsiveness and efficiency in busy networks.

Is Wi-Fi 8 faster than Wi-Fi 7?

Wi-Fi 8 is not mainly a peak-speed upgrade. Its most important changes are intended to keep connections steadier across distance, interference and crowded networks.

When will the Wi-Fi 8 standard be finished?

The IEEE 802.11 working group's current timeline predicts final working-group approval in March 2028. That date can change as the draft moves through review.

Who will get GFiber's Wi-Fi 8 gateway first?

GFiber says existing 20 Gig customers will be first after the gateway completes certification. It has not announced a public delivery date.

Can I buy a Wi-Fi 8 router in the United States?

TP-Link opened Archer 8 Ultra preorders in selected countries in September 2026, but as of October 20 it had not announced a U.S. price or launch date.
