How to Fix a Strict NAT Type on PS5, Xbox, and PC
By RSINC editorial team | Updated

A restrictive NAT result can interfere with joining a game, hosting or voice chat even when ordinary browsing works. The name and effect of a NAT category differ between platforms and games, so start with the error shown on your own device.
Check the platform test first
On Xbox, open Profile & system, then Settings, General and Network settings. Check the displayed NAT status and any separate Double NAT or UPnP error. Use Test NAT type after a troubleshooting step to see whether it changed. On PlayStation or PC, use the current console or game's connection test rather than assuming every platform uses the Xbox labels or menus.
Check the platform's service status and restart the equipment using the manufacturer's instructions. A wired connection helps separate Wi-Fi problems from a NAT issue. Keep router and console software current.
Find out whether two devices are routing
A provider gateway and a second home router can create double NAT. Ask the provider or router manufacturer whether bridge mode, IP passthrough or access-point mode is appropriate for your setup. These modes differ, and changing a gateway can affect other services. Our bridge-mode guide explains the terminology.
Use the manufacturer's supported method
Xbox's current troubleshooting sequence includes UPnP, firmware checks and separate guidance for multiple consoles. Follow the instructions for your router model and platform. If you use manual port forwarding, reserve the intended device's local address and use the current protocol and port requirements for that specific service.
Do not combine UPnP, manual forwarding and a DMZ configuration as overlapping fixes. Microsoft explicitly cautions against combining those settings. A port list for one PlayStation error or a particular game is not a universal list for every PS5, Xbox and PC game. This guide does not provide blanket port-opening rules.
Keep the router firewall enabled. Avoid placing a general-purpose PC in a DMZ to chase an Open status. If the basic steps do not resolve the issue, ask the provider or device manufacturer to review the setup before exposing additional services.
Ask about upstream NAT
The shared IPv4 range 100.64.0.0 through 100.127.255.255 is reserved for uses including carrier-grade NAT. Seeing an upstream address in that range is a clue to discuss with your provider, rather than a diagnosis by itself. Other private addresses can also indicate another router upstream.
A forwarding rule on your home router cannot by itself configure an upstream provider router. Ask whether a suitable public-address or supported IPv6 option exists for your service; eligibility and charges can vary. See our port-forwarding and CGNAT guide for background.
NAT and lag are different problems
Changing NAT status does not guarantee better latency. If the game connects but feels slow, investigate wired performance, packet loss and server location using our ping and latency guide.
