CNET's 2026 Internet Provider Rankings: What the Scores Mean for Your Home
Updated

CNET published its 2026 rankings of the best internet service providers in August, and fiber providers took most of the top spots. GFiber, formerly Google Fiber, finished first with a score of 9.5 out of 10. Regional fiber companies followed closely, while the big cable companies landed in the middle of the pack.
Rankings are a useful starting point, but they don't tell you what's available at your address or what fits your household. Here's a plain-English summary of the results, what CNET was actually measuring and how to use the scores when you shop.
The top-scoring providers
| Provider | Type | CNET 2026 score |
|---|---|---|
| GFiber | Fiber | 9.5 (best overall, best value) |
| Kinetic Fiber | Fiber | 9.2 |
| Fidium Fiber | Fiber | 9.1 |
| Breezeline | Cable and fiber | 9.1 |
| Quantum Fiber | Fiber | 9.0 |
| Xfinity | Cable | 8.9 (top cable provider) |
| TDS Telecom | Fiber | 8.8 (honorable mention) |
| Spectrum | Cable | 7.9 |
| T-Mobile 5G Home Internet | 5G fixed wireless | 7.5 (best 5G) |
| Starlink | Satellite | 6.7 (best rural) |
CNET says it evaluated 31 providers and recommended 18. It left DSL out entirely, calling it outdated, and scored companies that sell both fiber and 5G service, like AT&T and T-Mobile, separately for each.
What CNET was measuring
This year's scoring leaned heavily on price and fine print rather than marketing claims:
- Value (50%). Cost per megabit per second. Providers that deliver more speed for the money scored higher.
- Contract friction (20%). Data caps, how long price locks last, whether you can skip renting the provider's router and whether hidden fees show up on the bill.
- Price transparency (20%). How easy it was to find prices, terms and the FCC-required Broadband Facts labels before buying.
- Customer satisfaction (10%). Drawn from a reader survey. When a provider didn't have enough responses, the other three categories were reweighted.
That formula explains a lot about the results. Fiber providers tend to offer more speed for the money and fewer caps. Providers with flat, easy-to-find pricing earned points too. GFiber got a perfect transparency score for its no-promo, no-contract pricing, and Kinetic says CNET recognized it for the most transparent pricing as well.

Our takeaways
1. Fiber wins on value, if you can get it
The top five were all fiber or mostly fiber. That matches what we see in plan prices. On October 2, a gigabit plan cost $70 a month from GFiber, $39.99 from Kinetic with AutoPay in select markets and $50 from Quantum Fiber after discounts. Fiber also gives you matching upload speeds, which cable can't.
2. Cable is closer than you might think
Xfinity's 8.9 put it just behind the fiber leaders. Its five-year price guarantee and included Wi-Fi equipment address two of the things CNET penalized most: short price locks and equipment fees. Spectrum's lower score reflects a one-year promo price and extra charges for whole-home Wi-Fi on some plans.
3. "Best rural" still means trade-offs
Starlink's 6.7 was enough to win the rural category, but it's well below the fiber scores. CNET noted that satellite and 5G are filling gaps while federal programs are delayed or ended. If you're rural and fiber or cable has recently reached your road, it's usually worth comparing.
4. Your address beats any ranking
Most of the top-ranked providers are regional. GFiber, Kinetic, Fidium, Breezeline and Quantum each serve specific areas, and many people can't get any of them. The best provider for you is the best one that actually serves your home.
How to use these rankings when you shop
- Start with availability. List every provider at your address, including fiber, cable, 5G and satellite.
- Compare the two-year cost. Add the promo price, the post-promo price and any equipment or Wi-Fi fees.
- Read the Broadband Facts label. Every provider must show one. It lists the monthly price, fees and typical speeds in a standard format.
- Check upload speed if you work from home, game or back up lots of photos.
