Spectrum vs Xfinity Internet: Which Cable Provider Is the Better Deal?
Updated

Spectrum and Xfinity are the two largest cable internet providers in the country, and their pricing strategies have split in an interesting way. Spectrum leads with a low first-year price, no data caps, and a free modem. Xfinity now leads with a five-year price guarantee that includes Wi-Fi equipment and unlimited data. Which one is the better deal depends on how long you plan to stay and how much Wi-Fi gear you need.
One reality check first: the two rarely serve the same address. Cable companies built their networks in separate areas, so most homes can get one or the other, not both. This comparison matters most when you're moving and choosing between neighborhoods, live in one of the few overlap pockets, or want to know how your provider measures up. Both use fiber in the neighborhood network and coaxial cable for the last stretch to your home.
Spectrum vs Xfinity: current plans (October 1, 2026)
| Speed | Spectrum | Xfinity |
|---|---|---|
| Entry tier | 100 Mbps: $30/mo for 1 year | 300 Mbps: $45/mo for 5 years |
| Middle tier | 500 Mbps: $40/mo for 1 year | 500 Mbps: $60/mo for 5 years |
| 1 Gig | $60/mo for 1 year | $70/mo for 5 years |
| After the promo | Standard rates apply after year one | Base rate locked for 60 months |
Prices exclude taxes and fees and vary by address. Xfinity's listed offer requires autopay with a stored bank account and paperless billing and ends October 25.
Price: year one vs the long run
Spectrum wins year one. Its 500 Mbps plan at $40 and 1 Gig at $60 undercut Xfinity's equivalent plans by $20 and $10 a month during the first 12 months. Spectrum also promotes "Switch and save $1,000. Guaranteed." for new customers.
Xfinity is built for the long haul. Its 5-Year Price Guarantee locks your base monthly internet rate for 60 months, and Xfinity says the rate stays the same if you move to another address in its service area. Spectrum's promotional price ends after one year, when standard rates apply. Before you order, ask Spectrum for the month-13 price on your plan and compare it with Xfinity's locked rate. That's usually where the real difference shows up.

Spectrum and Xfinity rarely serve the same street. Check your ZIP to see which one you can get, plus any fiber or 5G alternatives.
Wi-Fi equipment: the fee that changes the math
This is the biggest structural difference between the two.
- Spectrum includes a modem with every plan at no extra cost, but whole-home Wi-Fi is separate on most tiers. Advanced WiFi is $10 a month, or included with 1 Gig. Invincible WiFi, which adds automatic 5G backup and an eight-hour backup battery, is $30 a month, or included with the 2 Gig plan in select markets.
- Xfinity includes WiFi equipment in the price of its current plans, along with WiFi Shield features like parental controls and network security alerts.
So a Spectrum 500 Mbps plan with Advanced WiFi is really $50 a month in year one, not $40. You can also buy your own compatible router to avoid the Wi-Fi add-on entirely.
Data caps and contracts
Good news on both sides. Spectrum advertises no data caps and no contracts. Xfinity's current plans include unlimited data in the price, with no annual contract and no early termination fee. Older Xfinity plans in some areas carried data caps, so if you're an existing customer on a legacy plan, check your account.
Mobile perks
Both providers use free mobile lines to win internet customers. Spectrum includes Spectrum Mobile free for a year on its advertised plans. Xfinity offers a free Mobile Select line for a year, then $30 a month with internet, and its 1 Gig plan currently adds Peacock Premium for two years. Read the terms: these lines generally require you to keep the internet service, and regular rates apply after the free period.
Speed and performance
Both reach gigabit downloads, and Spectrum sells up to 2 Gig in select markets. As cable services, both have upload speeds well below their download speeds on most plans. That's fine for streaming and browsing but can matter if you upload large files or run several video calls at once. If fiber is available at your address, compare it too.
Which should you choose?
Spectrum makes sense if you want the lowest first-year bill, already have your own router, or expect to move or renegotiate within a year.
Xfinity makes sense if you plan to stay put, want Wi-Fi equipment included, and value knowing your base rate for five years.
