Where the growth is coming from

Part of the jump comes from AT&T's purchase of Lumen Technologies' mass-market fiber business earlier this year, which added Lumen's consumer fiber locations to AT&T's footprint. The rest is AT&T's own construction. AT&T also said it's open to buying more fiber, but only at the right price and in the right places.

AT&T is leaning hard on bundles. It said about 42.8% of its advanced home internet households also have AT&T postpaid phone service.

Fiber or Internet Air?

AT&T sells two kinds of home internet. Fiber is a wired connection; upload speeds vary by plan and are often higher than cable uploads. Internet Air uses AT&T's 5G network and is meant for places fiber hasn't reached yet. CEO John Stankey said fixed wireless will keep "certain customers and applications," but expanding fiber will outstrip it over time. If both are offered at your address, compare the exact prices, speeds and installation terms.

What it means for you

  • More neighborhoods are getting fiber. If AT&T wasn't available last year, check your address again.
  • Competitors are responding. Comcast lost 144,000 broadband customers in the same quarter, and cable companies are pushing discounts to keep subscribers.
  • Bundle math matters. Check the current price with and without AT&T wireless before choosing a plan.
