Mobile Hotspot Connected but No Internet? 10 Fixes That Work on iPhone, Android and MiFi
By RSINC editorial team | Updated

Connected to a hotspot does not always mean connected to the internet. First check whether the phone or hotspot itself can load a webpage over mobile data. That separates a cellular-service problem from a Wi-Fi connection problem.
For related guidance, see hotspot troubleshooting and using a hotspot as your main internet connection.
Test the mobile connection first
- On the phone providing the hotspot, temporarily disconnect from Wi-Fi and test mobile data.
- Check signal, account status and whether the carrier reports an outage.
- Confirm that the plan permits tethering and that the hotspot allowance has not run out or changed to a lower-speed mode.
If the phone itself cannot reach the internet, repeatedly reconnecting the laptop to its Wi-Fi will not fix the underlying mobile connection.
Reconnect one device
Turn the hotspot off and on, then reconnect a single device using the correct network name and password. Restart both devices if needed. Test another webpage or application so one failing service is not mistaken for a complete outage.
Check the phone’s hotspot controls
On iPhone, check Personal Hotspot and Allow Others to Join. Supported devices offer Maximize Compatibility for connection difficulties. Apple’s official hotspot troubleshooting guide explains those settings and the effects of a network reset.
Android hotspot menus vary by manufacturer. Google’s tethering guide covers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB options and notes that carrier restrictions can apply. Follow your device’s instructions rather than assuming the same menu names on every phone.
Try a supported alternative connection
If both devices support it, USB tethering can help isolate a Wi-Fi problem. Check compatibility first: not every computer-and-phone combination supports every tethering method. For a standalone mobile hotspot, use its screen or management instructions to check data use and connection status.
Escalate with useful details
Tell support whether mobile data works on the phone, whether another device can use the hotspot and what error appears. Include the device model and when the problem began. Before a network reset, review which saved Wi-Fi networks, passwords and other settings it removes. A more expensive data plan is not a confirmed fix for a local connection-setting problem.
