Kinetic vs Spectrum: Which Internet Provider Should You Choose?
Updated

Kinetic and Spectrum overlap in a lot of smaller cities and suburbs, and they take very different approaches. Kinetic, the consumer brand of Uniti (formerly Windstream), is pushing hard on fiber, low entry prices and multi-year price guarantees. Spectrum runs a large cable network with simple pricing and a broad footprint. If both serve your address, the right choice depends on how you use the internet and how long you plan to stay.
Here's how they compare on October 2, 2026, using each provider's advertised prices.

Plans and pricing
Kinetic
Kinetic's fiber lineup runs from 100 Mbps for $19.99 to 2 Gig for $59.99, with a 300 Mbps plan at $34.99 and 1 Gig at $39.99. A Fiber Max 2 Gig plan for $79.99 bundles an eero Pro 7 Wi-Fi gateway, eero Plus security, extenders as needed and premium tech support. Several tiers come with a prepaid Mastercard, $100 on 1 Gig and $200 on the 2 Gig plans, and AT&T wireless customers can save $20 a month on plans of 300 Mbps and up.
Read the price-guarantee terms. Kinetic locks its everyday price for one year on 300 Mbps and 1 Gig, two years on Fiber 2 Gig and three years on Fiber Max. After that, rates can change. Kinetic's offer terms also note that taxes, fees, surcharges and equipment fees may apply on top of the advertised price.
Spectrum
Spectrum keeps it to three tiers: 100 Mbps for $30, 500 Mbps for $40 and 1 Gig for $60, each for one year. A modem is included. Whole-home Wi-Fi costs extra unless you choose the gig: Advanced WiFi is $10 a month or included with Internet 1 Gig, and Invincible WiFi, which adds backup, is $30 a month. Spectrum also adds a free Spectrum Mobile line for a year with its 500 Mbps and 1 Gig plans.

Speed and reliability
For downloads, both providers can handle a busy household. Kinetic's fiber reaches 2 Gig, while Spectrum's advertised plans top out at 1 Gig. The bigger difference is upload speed. Fiber can send data out as fast as it brings it in, which helps with video calls, cloud backups and uploading large files. Cable uploads are much slower than downloads, which most streaming-focused homes won't notice but remote workers and creators might.
One caveat: not every Kinetic address gets fiber. Kinetic still serves some areas with DSL, which is far slower. Make sure the plan you're quoted says "Fiber."
What third-party rankings say
In CNET's 2026 internet provider rankings, which weight price per megabit, fine print and price transparency heavily, Kinetic Fiber scored 9.2 out of 10, among the top fiber providers. Spectrum scored 7.9. Rankings aren't the whole story, but they reflect what we see in the plan details: Kinetic is very competitive on price per megabit, and Spectrum's pricing is simple but rises after the first year.
Which should you choose?
Choose Kinetic if fiber is available at your address, you want a gig for about $40, you value upload speed, or you want a longer price guarantee on a 2 Gig plan.
Choose Spectrum if Kinetic only offers DSL at your home, you want a quick self-install, or you'll use the free mobile line for a year.
Whichever you pick, put a reminder on your calendar for the month your promotional price or guarantee ends. That's when to call and ask for the current offer.
