Kinetic Is Moving Copper Customers to Fiber: What to Expect and What It Costs
Updated

If Kinetic has told you your DSL needs to move to fiber, the switch is required but free. Kinetic's support page says it's replacing its older copper lines with fiber, and that the move costs nothing, including new equipment, installation and setup of your devices. A technician installs a fiber line and new gear, and Kinetic adds 90 days of Premium Tech Support. You can schedule by calling Kinetic at 800-347-1991.

What install day looks like
- A technician runs a new fiber line to your home and mounts a small box (the ONT) inside or outside.
- They set up a new gateway or router and connect your phones, laptops, TVs and smart devices.
- They check for Wi-Fi dead zones before leaving.
- Plan for a few hours at home and clear access to where the old line enters the house.

Your phone line, plan and price
Kinetic's upgrade page doesn't spell out which fiber plan you'll land on or whether your monthly price changes, so ask before your appointment. If you have Kinetic home phone, alarm monitoring or a medical alert device on the copper line, ask how it will work over fiber and test it after the switch. Our guide on whether Windstream internet needs a phone line covers the basics, and what you really pay for Kinetic helps you check the new bill.
How to spot a scam call
- Kinetic says the switch has no cost, so anyone asking for an upfront payment is a red flag.
- Don't give card numbers, passwords or account PINs to an unexpected caller.
- Hang up and call Kinetic directly using the number on your bill or Kinetic's website.
Want to shop around?
You don't have to stay with Kinetic. Cable, other fiber or 5G home internet may reach your address. In rural areas, Starlink, Viasat and Hughesnet are options; Viasat advertises plans with speeds up to 80 Mbps; verify the actual offer and terms for your address. Other phone companies are doing the same thing; see AT&T's copper shutdown and Brightspeed's fiber replacement.
