Is Sparklight (Cable One) in Financial Trouble? What Customers Should Know
Updated

Sparklight is still running normally, but its parent company, Cable One, is in a public fight with one of its own lenders. On October 9, 2026, a federal judge in New York temporarily blocked Cable One from paying $480 million for the rest of Mega Broadband Investments, the company behind Vyve Broadband, after the lender, CoBank, argued Cable One is already insolvent. Cable One says the claims are wrong and is asking the court to lift the order. Nothing about your internet service has changed, and no shutdown or sale of Sparklight has been announced.
Here is what happened, what it could mean for your bill and service, and what to have ready if you want a backup option.
What happened between Cable One and CoBank
Cable One already owns 45% of Mega Broadband Investments (MBI). Its investment partner, GTCR, used a contractual right in January 2026 to make Cable One buy the remaining 55%. That deal was set to close on October 9.
That same day, CoBank, a lender under Cable One’s credit agreement, sued in federal court in Manhattan. CoBank says paying the $480 million would be a “constructive fraudulent transfer” because, in its view, Cable One is insolvent and would be overpaying. The judge issued a temporary restraining order before Cable One had a chance to respond, and ordered the company to explain why the deal should not be blocked until a fuller hearing.
Cable One filed its response on October 13. It argues CoBank waited until closing day on purpose, and that keeping the order in place threatens a roughly $1.3 billion financing package. The court entered an order on October 14 setting a hearing on the motion.
Is Cable One actually insolvent?
That is CoBank’s allegation, not a finding by the court. A restraining order only pauses things while a judge looks at the arguments. Cable One says it strongly believes the claims are incorrect as a matter of law, and it is not required to close the MBI purchase while the order is in effect. Cable One does carry heavy debt, which is why lenders are watching closely, but no bankruptcy filing has been made.
What it means for Sparklight customers
- Service: no change. Cable operators keep their networks running through financial disputes and even through restructurings.
- Prices: no announced change tied to the lawsuit. Promotional rates still end on their normal schedule, so check your bill date as usual.
- Vyve customers: the move of Vyve markets under Sparklight is the part that is paused. Until the purchase closes, MBI stays partly owned by GTCR.
- Email and equipment: nothing to do right now. If a rebrand or account move happens later, customers get notice first.

What to do now
A lawsuit alone is not a reason to switch. Still, it is a good moment to do a few low-effort things:
- Save a recent bill and note your plan name, price and promo end date.
- Know whether you rent or own your modem.
- Look up which other providers serve your address so you have a backup plan.
Alternatives in Sparklight markets
Sparklight serves many smaller and rural markets, so wired competition varies. In some towns a fiber provider or the local phone company also serves the area. Many addresses can also get 5G home internet from T-Mobile Home Internet or Verizon 5G Home where the cell signal is strong enough. Our Cable One provider page has plan details.
For rural homes without wired options, compare address-specific offers from Starlink, Viasat and Hughesnet. Plans, equipment terms and expected speeds vary by location, so confirm the current offer for your full address before ordering.
What happens next
The judge will decide whether to turn the temporary order into a preliminary injunction or lift it. If it is lifted, Cable One can close the MBI purchase. If not, the deal stays on hold while the case continues. We will update this page when the court rules.
