Internet Early Termination Fees in 2026: How Much You Owe to Switch
Updated

Early termination fees still decide whether switching internet providers is cheap or painful in 2026. On the satellite side, Hughesnet can charge up to $400 if you leave during the term, Viasat Essentials uses a $15-per-remaining-month example on its 24-month plan, and Viasat Unleashed has no minimum term. Starlink generally allows monthly cancellation, but a no-cost-kit commitment can trigger a change fee. On cable and fiber, the safer move is usually a no-contract plan, and sometimes a new provider will help buy out an old fee.
This page compares the fee structures you are most likely to hit, then points to cancel and buy-out guides for the steps. It does not invent dollar amounts for Spectrum, Xfinity or AT&T term plans that we could not verify today.
ETF snapshot by provider type
| Provider / plan type | Typical term | ETF structure (checked Oct 24, 2026) | After the term |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hughesnet (purchase option) | Minimum term on all plans | Up to $400 for the first 90 days after activation; then −$15/mo for Select, Elite and Fusion, −$30/mo for Lite | Month-to-month, no ETF |
| Hughesnet (lease option) | Minimum term | Up to $400 for the first 90 days, then −$15/mo; return modem, power supply and radio within 45 days or pay unreturned-equipment fees (about $300 on the moving-page schedule) | Month-to-month, no ETF |
| Viasat Essentials | 24-month minimum | FAQ example: $15 × remaining months (10 months in leaves 14 months = $210) | Terms end; confirm current renewal rules at cancel time |
| Viasat Unleashed / Unleashed Max | Month-to-month | No early termination fee | Cancel anytime under plan rules |
| Starlink residential | Usually no minimum term; promotional hardware commitments vary | Monthly cancellation on standard plans; some no-cost-kit offers have a 12-month commitment and change fee | Review any kit commitment |
| Cable / fiber / 5G home internet | Varies by offer | Prefer no-contract offers; do not rely on unverified ETF dollars here | Many promos convert to standard rates after 12 months |
Fee schedules above for Hughesnet come from hughesnet.com/moving and for Viasat from its residential FAQ and plan terms, checked October 24, 2026. Taxes, unpaid balances and unreturned gear can add cost on top of the ETF line.
Hughesnet: the fee that shrinks each month
Hughesnet is the satellite brand where the ETF math is most explicit. If you cancel after activation but before the commitment ends, the service termination fee starts at up to $400 for the first 90 days. After day 90, purchase-option Select, Elite and Fusion accounts drop $15 per month of active service, and Lite drops $30 per month. Lease accounts follow a similar $400-then-$15 path and add unreturned-equipment charges if the modem, power supply and radio are not sent back on time.
Once the minimum term is finished, the account goes month-to-month with no ETF. That is why waiting out the last few months can cost less than paying a mid-term exit. For the cancel process itself, use how to cancel Hughesnet and whether canceling Hughesnet is hard rather than repeating those steps here.
Switching providers and worried about an ETF?
Contract terms and buyout offers vary by address. Check no-contract options at your ZIP before you call to cancel.
Viasat: Essentials has a term; Unleashed does not
Viasat splits cleanly. Unleashed and Unleashed Max are sold as month-to-month plans with no early termination fee, which is why they are the easier exit if you may switch later. Essentials carries a 24-month minimum. Viasat's FAQ example charges $15 for each remaining month: cancel 10 months into a 24-month term and you owe 14 × $15, or $210, before any other balances.
Eligible Viasat orders through RSINC carry a quoted minimum of 80 Mbps down and 3 to 5 Mbps up; confirm the written terms for your address. That speed floor is separate from the contract question. See Unleashed plan details, what canceling Viasat can cost, canceling Unleashed and canceling without calling for process detail.
Starlink: check for a kit commitment and return rules
Starlink's standard monthly plans can be canceled without a traditional service ETF, but some no-cost-kit promotions require a 12-month service commitment and may charge a change fee if canceled early. Check the terms shown at checkout. You must also follow any equipment-return or rental rules that apply to your order. Use how to cancel Starlink and return equipment and canceling a Starlink order before it ships for the logistics.
Cable, fiber and 5G: prefer no-contract when you switch
Many Spectrum, Xfinity and AT&T offers in 2026 are sold without a long ETF, but term agreements and equipment recovery fees still appear on some bundles and older accounts. We are not quoting specific Spectrum, Xfinity or AT&T ETF dollar amounts on this page because we did not verify those figures today. Ask retention for a written payoff before you schedule a disconnect.
When you shop the replacement plan, favor month-to-month internet so you do not stack a new ETF on top of an old one. If a new provider advertises a contract buy-out, read the reimbursement cap and receipt rules first. Our guide to which internet providers buy out contracts in 2026 covers that path without repeating every cancel script.
How to decide whether to pay, wait or get a buy-out
- Ask for the exact ETF in writing, including remaining months and any unreturned-equipment line.
- Compare that number with the months left on the term. Waiting can be cheaper than paying.
- If you are on Viasat Essentials, compare month-to-month options before you re-sign another term.
- If a new fiber or cable offer includes ETF reimbursement, confirm the dollar cap and what proof they need.
- Return leased gear on time. Unreturned equipment fees can rival the ETF itself.
- Do not cancel the old service until the new install date is confirmed, unless the current provider requires an earlier disconnect.
Quick examples using published schedules
| Situation | Ballpark fee from published rules |
|---|---|
| Hughesnet Select, purchase option, cancel in month 2 | Up to $400 (still inside first 90 days) |
| Hughesnet Lite, purchase option, after several months past day 90 | Starts at $400, then drops $30 per active month |
| Viasat Essentials, 10 months into a 24-month term | $210 on the FAQ $15 × 14 months example |
| Viasat Unleashed or standard monthly Starlink | No traditional service ETF; Starlink hardware promotions may have a change fee |
These examples are arithmetic from the published schedules, not a quote for your account. Your bill may also include unpaid service, taxes or equipment charges.
