Google's gFiber Is Coming to Woodstock, Georgia: What the City's New Franchise Deal Means

Updated

Woodstock, Georgia has approved a franchise agreement with Google Fiber, now branded gFiber. The deal, reported by the Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News on October 22, 2026, gives gFiber permission to install equipment in the city's right of way. It's the first formal step toward fiber service in Woodstock, but there's no launch date yet.

What the agreement does

City Manager Jeff Moon told the paper that a franchise agreement is how the city gives a provider permission to use its right of way, the same as it does for Comcast and AT&T, and that the company pays a franchise fee back to the city based on its revenue. He also noted that the agreement doesn't mean the city itself will use gFiber's service.

When gFiber could launch

According to Moon, gFiber will now draw up build-out plans for Woodstock, including a timeline. Until those plans are done, there's no time estimate. He said the company is in negotiations and he expects an announcement in the near future. gFiber hasn't announced prices, speeds or neighborhoods for Woodstock.

What gFiber usually offers

gFiber sells fiber plans in its other cities. See how much Google Fiber costs for current plan prices, and Xfinity vs. Google Fiber for how it compares with cable where both are available.

A similar path elsewhere

Woodstock is following the same steps we've seen in other gFiber cities. In Missouri, Grain Valley approved gFiber's underground build before construction began. Expect permits, street work and signups by neighborhood once plans are final.

What to do now

  • Don't cancel your current service yet. Build-outs often take a year or more after a franchise deal.
  • Watch for gFiber's official announcement and sign up for updates when it opens a Woodstock page.
  • If your contract is ending, choose a month-to-month plan so you can switch later without a fee.
