YouTube’s AV2 Plans for 2027: Data Use and Device Support

YouTube says AV2 streams could reach the web as early as 2027. That is a forward-looking rollout statement, not an announcement that every television, phone or video will switch at the same time.

Compare streaming data use and how much internet data a household needs before changing an internet plan.

What AV2 does

AV2 is a video-compression specification from the Alliance for Open Media, succeeding AV1. A codec determines how video is encoded and decoded. More efficient compression can deliver a similar visual result with fewer bits, or use a given bitrate for higher quality.

In its October 22 announcement, AOMedia claims approximately 30% greater compression efficiency than AV1. That is the standards group’s characterization, not a promise that your YouTube data total or internet bill will fall by 30%.

What YouTube has announced

The same AOMedia release includes YouTube engineering director Des Keane’s statement that AV2 web streams could be available as early as 2027. The release also discusses early browser playback demonstrations and implementation work. It does not give a universal switchover date for every device.

Will your television support it?

Check the specific TV, streaming-device, browser and application documentation. Software decoding and dedicated hardware decoding are different implementation choices. Support for AV1 does not, by itself, establish support for AV2.

There is no need to replace a working television solely on the basis of an early web rollout statement. Wait for the manufacturer and service to identify supported models and any relevant update requirements.

Will it reduce a data-cap problem?

Your total still depends on viewing time, resolution, frame rate, actual bitrate and what the service delivers to the device. A platform can spend efficiency gains on better picture quality rather than a proportional reduction in bytes.

Check usage through your internet account and review playback-quality settings. See our data-cap guide and 4K on a 30 Mbps connection for practical comparisons. Codec efficiency does not remove a provider’s data allowance.

What to watch next

Look for confirmed rollout dates, supported browsers and devices, and measured results under comparable picture settings. Treat early demonstrations and roadmap statements as progress toward deployment, rather than proof that every household is already receiving AV2 video.
