What Internet Speed Do You Need for Streaming in 2026?

Updated

Streaming one show doesn't take much internet speed. Streaming on every screen in the house at once is a different story. Most major services recommend somewhere between 3 and 25 Mbps per stream, depending on picture quality. The speed you need from your internet plan depends on how many of those streams run at the same time, and what else your household is doing online.

Here's what the biggest streaming services recommend as of October 2026, and how to turn those numbers into the right plan.

What the streaming services recommend

ServiceHD4KNotes
Netflix3 Mbps (720p), 5 Mbps (1080p)15 Mbps4K requires a plan and device that support it
Disney+5 Mbps25 Mbps8 Mbps recommended for live content
YouTube TV7 Mbps for one stream, 13 Mbps for reliable HD with other devices online25 Mbps4K needs the 4K Plus add-on
YouTube1 Mbps or more for movies, TV and live streamsHigher for 4K500 Kbps minimum for basic playback

These figures come from each service's help center and are per stream. They describe what's needed for a stable picture, not your total household need.

Why per-stream numbers aren't the whole answer

Three things push your real speed needs higher than those recommendations:

  • Simultaneous streams. Two 4K TVs on Disney+ need about 50 Mbps between them. Add a tablet in HD and you're near 55.
  • Everything else online. Phones update apps, laptops sync to the cloud, game consoles download huge updates and security cameras upload video all day.
  • Wi-Fi losses. Your plan speed is what reaches the router. A TV two rooms away over Wi-Fi may get only a fraction of it.

A good rule of thumb is to add up your likely peak streaming and then double or triple it.

How much speed your household needs

These suggestions are our guidance, based on the services' recommendations above plus room for everyday use:

HouseholdTypical peak streamingSuggested plan
One person, mostly HDOne or two HD streams50 to 100 Mbps
Couple with a 4K TVOne 4K stream plus phones and laptops100 to 200 Mbps
Family of fourTwo 4K TVs, a tablet and a game console300 Mbps
Large or tech-heavy householdThree or more 4K streams, gaming, work calls and cameras500 Mbps to 1 Gig

Live TV and sports need steady speed, not just fast speed

Live streaming services and sports have become a big part of how people watch. Live video can't load far ahead the way an on-demand movie can, so short dips in your connection show up as stutters or a sudden drop in picture quality. That's why Disney+ recommends more for live content than for regular HD, and why YouTube TV distinguishes between one HD stream and reliable HD with other devices online.

For game day, consistency matters more than raw speed. A wired Ethernet connection to your main TV, a well-placed router and a plan with some headroom will do more than a big number on a speed test.

Don't forget upload speed

Streaming is mostly download, but uploads matter in a busy home. Video calls, cloud backups and home security cameras all send data out. On cable plans with low upload speeds, a big upload can make everyone's streams stutter. Fiber's matching upload and download speeds avoid that problem.

Is your current plan enough?

Try this quick check:

  1. Run a speed test on a device plugged into your router at a busy time, like a weeknight evening.
  2. Run another on Wi-Fi next to the TV that has trouble.
  3. Compare both with the household table above.

If your wired speed is well above what you need but the TV still buffers, the fix is better Wi-Fi, not a faster plan. If your wired speed regularly falls short, it's time to look at a faster plan or a different type of service.

Frequently asked questions

What internet speed do I need for 4K streaming?

Plan on about 15 to 25 Mbps per 4K stream. Netflix recommends 15 Mbps or more for 4K, while Disney+ and YouTube TV recommend 25 Mbps.

Is 100 Mbps good for streaming?

Yes, for most households. A 100 Mbps plan can handle two or three 4K streams plus everyday browsing. Bigger households that stream on several TVs at once should look at 300 Mbps or more.

Does live TV need more speed than on-demand streaming?

A little. Live streams can't buffer far ahead, so they're more sensitive to slowdowns. Disney+ recommends 8 Mbps for live content versus 5 Mbps for on-demand HD.
