Streaming Services With Student Discounts: Every Deal Compared

Updated

The cheapest way for a college student to get several streaming services is to stack the student deals. HBO Max's student plan is $5.49 a month. The Disney+ and Hulu student bundle is $6.49 a month. Spotify Premium Student is $6.99 a month and includes Hulu with ads, so pairing Spotify with HBO Max gets you music, Hulu and HBO Max for about $12.50 a month. Netflix and YouTube TV don't offer student pricing.

How student verification works

Most services send you to UNiDAYS or SheerID, where you sign in with your school or upload proof of enrollment. Most deals require a college or university, not a high school, and you'll need to re-verify about once a year. When you graduate or stop qualifying, the plan usually renews at the regular price, so set a reminder.

Smart ways to stack deals

  • Start with Spotify Premium Student if you want music, since it already includes Hulu with ads.
  • Add HBO Max at the student price instead of paying for a full bundle.
  • Pick the Disney+ and Hulu bundle only if you don't already get Hulu through Spotify.
  • Share a single live TV service with roommates only if its terms allow it.

Internet for streaming at school

Campus Wi-Fi is often crowded in the evenings. If you live off campus, our guide to cheap and free internet for students covers low-cost plans, and why apartment Wi-Fi is so bad explains how to fix weak signals. Plan on about 25 Mbps for each HD stream running at the same time. If you need a backup, find out whether a mobile hotspot can handle movies.
