Is Starlink Standby Mode Worth It in 2026?

Updated

Starlink Standby Mode lets you pause full-speed service without canceling, while keeping a slow, always-on connection for emergencies. When it launched in 2025, it cost $5 a month. Since then, Starlink has doubled the price to $10 a month and removed some of the perks that made it an easy choice. Here's what Standby Mode gets you now, and when it's still worth paying for.

What Standby Mode is

Standby Mode replaced Starlink's old free pause option in August 2025. Instead of going completely dark when you pause, your dish stays connected at a very low speed:

  • Speed: up to about 0.5 Mbps (500 Kbps) download and upload
  • Data: unlimited at that low speed, with no high-speed data
  • Plans: available on Residential, Roam and Priority plans, except some promotional offers and kit rentals
  • Resuming: switch back to a full-speed plan from the app, with the monthly fee charged right away on a prorated basis

Half a megabit is enough for text messages, messaging apps, basic email and letting smart devices check in. It isn't enough for streaming video, video calls or anything heavy.

What changed in 2026

WhenChange
March 2026In-motion use removed from Standby Mode
April 2026Standby no longer waives demand surcharges when you return to Residential service
June 18, 2026Price rises from $5 to $10 a month for existing customers' billing cycles on or after this date

These changes were announced through customer notices and Starlink's help documentation. Starlink's prices can vary, so check your account for the exact Standby price on your bill.

The demand surcharge catch

This is the change most likely to cost you. In busy areas, Starlink charges a one-time demand surcharge to start Residential service. When Standby launched, pausing and then resuming in a surcharge area didn't trigger that charge again. Now Starlink's help pages say Standby only preserves your eligibility if you already paid a surcharge at that address. If you didn't, one may apply when you resume, and reports have put some of those charges as high as about $1,500.

Standby also doesn't hold your place on a Residential plan. If your area fills up while you're paused, you may need to restart on a different plan.

Using Starlink only part of the year?

If you have a seasonal home or cabin, compare every option at that address before you pay to keep a dish on standby.

When Standby Mode is worth it

  • Seasonal homes and cabins. If you're away for a few months and want to restart without re-activating, $10 a month keeps the dish online and lets smart thermostats, sensors or cameras send basic alerts.
  • Emergency backup. If you live where storms knock out other service, a slow link for messages can be worth $10 a month.
  • Short breaks. For a pause of a few months, Standby usually costs less than paying for a full plan you aren't using.

When it isn't worth it

  • Long pauses. A year on Standby costs $120. If you won't use the dish for many months, compare that with canceling and restarting later, keeping in mind any activation or surcharge costs.
  • RVs and boats on the move. Standby no longer works in motion, which takes away a big reason travelers used it.
  • Surcharge areas. If you never paid a demand surcharge at your address and your area now has one, resuming could cost far more than the Standby fees you saved.
  • Homes with a better option. If fiber, cable or 5G home internet has reached your area since you got Starlink, your money may be better spent switching.

How to decide in three steps

  1. Count the months. Multiply the months you'll be away by $10.
  2. Check your address. Before you pause, see whether a demand surcharge applies at your location and whether you've already paid one.
  3. Compare the alternatives. Price out canceling and restarting, or switching to a different provider if one now serves your home.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Starlink Standby Mode cost?

Starlink notified customers that Standby Mode would rise from $5 to $10 a month for billing cycles starting on or after June 18, 2026. Check your Starlink account for the price that applies to you.

How fast is Starlink Standby Mode?

Standby Mode provides unlimited low-speed data of up to about 0.5 Mbps (500 Kbps) download and upload. That's enough for messaging and basic email, not for streaming or video calls.

Does Standby Mode hold my spot on a Residential plan?

No. Starlink says pausing with Standby Mode doesn't reserve your Residential spot. If your area is at capacity when you resume, you may need to pick a different plan, and a demand surcharge may apply if you haven't already paid one at that location.
