Starlink in Alberta: What Rural Households Need to Know in 2026

This guide covers what matters for Starlink in Alberta in 2026: how well rural areas are covered, which public programs apply, how to install for local weather, and what else is available.

Rural and remote coverage

Federal evaluation data shows Alberta had one of the largest numbers of households without 50/10 Mbps service, second only to Ontario. The province estimates about 10,000 households are outside current broadband expansion projects.

Provincial and local programs

Alberta opened its Satellite Rebate Program on October 14, 2026. It pays up to $1,000 toward eligible low-Earth-orbit satellite hardware, installation and taxes for homes without high-speed ground-based service. Purchases from August 11, 2026 to March 31, 2027 may qualify. You apply after your first month of service, by March 31, 2027. Starlink equipment is on the current authorized-seller list. Monthly fees, rentals, optional Wi-Fi gear and business connections are excluded.

Federal funding

The federal Universal Broadband Fund is a $3.225 billion program to bring 50/10 Mbps internet to 98% of Canadian households by the end of 2026 and 100% by 2030. As of May 2026, ISED reports that 97.4% of all households, and 87.4% of rural households, had access to 50/10 Mbps service. The fund pays for infrastructure projects, not rebates for individual households.

Installing for prairie winters

Mount the dish high and clear of drifting snow, and brace it well against strong prairie wind. Run cable before the ground freezes.

Rogers Satellite for phones

Rogers Satellite runs on Starlink and connects compatible, unlocked phones where there's no cell coverage. It's included on new Rogers 5G+ plans. Otherwise it costs $10/month for 12 months for existing Rogers customers, or $15/month for anyone else, including customers of other carriers. Check Rogers' coverage information to confirm service in your area.

Alternatives to Starlink in Alberta

Xplore and local fixed wireless providers serve many rural areas, and fibre projects are underway in some counties.

Telesat, a Canadian company, is building a low-Earth-orbit network called Lightspeed. Ottawa has a $600 million agreement to buy Lightspeed capacity for internet providers serving hard-to-reach communities. We couldn't confirm a direct-to-household Lightspeed offer as of October 2026.
