Hughesnet Email Is Shutting Down Nov. 16, 2026: How to Move Your hughes.net Mail
Updated

Hughesnet is ending its hughes.net email service. Its official support FAQs tell customers to move their messages and update their email address with banks, doctors and other contacts before November 16, 2026. Forwarding from a hughes.net address will not continue after that date. Hughesnet has step-by-step guides for moving mail to Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo, and Gmail is the simplest of the three. Your Hughesnet internet plan is separate from the email account, so this change is about your mailbox, not your connection.
Key facts from Hughesnet’s FAQ
| Item | What Hughesnet says (as of Oct 19, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Deadline | Move your mail and update your address before Nov. 16, 2026 |
| Forwarding | Helps during the transition but will not continue after the platform ends |
| New accounts | New Hughesnet email accounts can no longer be created |
| Drafts and Deleted | Do not move in the Gmail import; save or send them yourself |
| Device | Use a desktop or laptop; the transfers do not work well on a phone |
| Time needed | Gmail import can take several hours, up to 2 days for big mailboxes |
Before you start
- Make sure you can sign in to your hughes.net mailbox at myhughesnet.com with your full email address and password.
- Pick the new address you will keep. Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo are all free.
- Open your Drafts and Deleted folders and forward or save anything you need.
- Do not delete anything from hughes.net until you have checked the move worked.
Move hughes.net mail to Gmail
Hughesnet recommends Gmail because Gmail can pull your old mail in directly.
- Sign in to the Gmail account that will receive your mail, or create one.
- Open Settings (the gear), then See all settings, then Accounts and Import.
- Select Import mail and contacts (or Add a mail account if that is what you see).
- Enter your full hughes.net address, then your hughes.net password.
- Choose Import mail and Add label to all imported mail, then Start import.
- If Gmail says the POP server cannot be verified, edit the account so the POP server is mail.hughes.net and the port is 110, then save.
- Check back later. Your mail appears under a label named after your hughes.net address.
Move hughes.net mail to Outlook
Outlook does not pull mail directly from hughes.net, so you export first and then import.
- At myhughesnet.com, select My Email, then the Settings icon, then Settings > Accounts.
- Expand your account, scroll to Export and select Export. A .tgz archive with your mail, contacts and calendars downloads to your computer.
- In File Explorer, right-click the archive and choose Extract All.
- Open the new Outlook app and sign in with your Outlook account.
- Go to File > Account info > Data files, and under Email Files (.eml) select Start import.
- Pick the extracted Inbox folder, choose or create a destination folder, and select Import. Repeat for Sent and Drafts.
Move hughes.net mail to Yahoo
Yahoo Mail has no import tool of its own. Hughesnet’s workaround is to add your Yahoo account to the new Outlook app, export your hughes.net mailbox as above, and then import the extracted folders into a Yahoo folder from inside Outlook. You do not need an Outlook email address to do this.
Rethinking your home internet too?
If you are moving off Hughesnet email, it is a good time to see what other internet service reaches your address.
Update your email address everywhere
Moving old messages does not change the address that companies and people have on file. Hughesnet suggests starting with the accounts that matter most:
- Banks, credit cards and loans
- Insurance, doctors and pharmacies
- Utilities and government services
- Employer, benefits and retirement accounts
- Shopping, subscriptions and delivery apps
- Family, friends and community groups
- Any account that uses your hughes.net address for password recovery
Search your hughes.net inbox for words like statement, bill, receipt, password, verification and renewal to find accounts you may have forgotten. Change the address on each company’s own website or app rather than through a link in an email, since shutdowns like this attract phishing. Also update the contact email on your Hughesnet account under Account > My Information.
What happens after Nov. 16
After the cutoff, plan on your hughes.net address being gone for good: forwarding stops and you should not expect to reach the old mailbox. That is why the deadline is for finishing the move and the address changes, not starting them. Give yourself at least a few days, because a large Gmail import alone can take up to 2 days.
Thinking about switching internet providers?
Losing the hughes.net address removes one reason some customers stayed with Hughesnet. If you are weighing a change, our guide on keeping ISP email after switching explains why a free Gmail or Outlook address is the safer long-term choice, and Hughesnet vs Viasat vs Starlink compares the satellite options.
