How to Talk to a Real Person at Your Internet Provider: Shortcuts for Every Major ISP
Updated

Most internet providers offer a way to reach a person, but phone menus differ. Say "representative" or "agent" when that option is available, select the category that matches your issue, and ask for a callback if one is offered. Starlink is the main exception, since its support runs mostly through tickets in its app.
The demand is real. In an October 2026 Consumer Cellular survey of U.S. adults age 50 and older, 87% of surveyed customers said they would consider leaving a company that kept them in an automated loop with no way to reach a human.
Shortcuts that work at most providers
- Have your account number and the phone number on the account ready, so you pass verification on the first try.
- Say "agent" or "representative" at the first prompt, and repeat it if the bot tries to fix the problem itself.
- Choose the menu option that matches your actual issue, then ask to be transferred if the first team cannot help.
- Use chat in the provider's app and type "agent" if hold times are long.
- Ask for a callback instead of waiting on hold, if it's offered.
- Write down the agent's name and a reference number before you hang up.

Best times to call
Wait times vary by provider and by outages. If the hold is long, try the provider app, online chat or a callback option; check posted support hours before calling.
When it's time to switch
If you can never reach anyone, a provider with better support may be worth a few dollars more. In rural areas, compare Starlink, Viasat and Hughesnet. Viasat customers who order through RSINC are guaranteed at least 80 Mbps down and 3-5 Mbps up.
