How Long Will GTA 6 Take to Download? 212 GB Estimates
By RSINC editorial team | Updated

A 212 GB transfer takes about 28 minutes at a steady 1 Gbps or 57 minutes at 500 Mbps before overhead. At 100 Mbps, the same transfer takes about 4 hours 43 minutes. Those are calculations, not measured GTA 6 download results or a guarantee for launch day.
As checked November 7, 2026, PlayStation’s official GTA VI support page tells PS5 owners to have 212 GB of storage available. It lists pre-load starting November 10 at midnight local time and release on November 19 at midnight local time. Required storage is not necessarily the number of bytes downloaded. The table below uses 212 decimal GB as a planning scenario, not a confirmed identical download size on every platform.
GTA 6 download-time estimates by speed
| Sustained download speed | Ideal time for 212 GB |
|---|---|
| 25 Mbps | 18 hours 51 minutes |
| 50 Mbps | 9 hours 25 minutes |
| 100 Mbps | 4 hours 43 minutes |
| 200 Mbps | 2 hours 21 minutes |
| 300 Mbps | 1 hour 34 minutes |
| 500 Mbps | 57 minutes |
| 1 Gbps | 28 minutes |
| 2 Gbps | 14 minutes |
The calculation is file size in decimal gigabytes multiplied by 8,000, then divided by megabits per second to get seconds. Times are rounded to the nearest minute. They exclude transfer overhead, pauses, patches, decompression and installation. The number shown on the console once downloading starts is more useful than a pre-release estimate.
For other game sizes and the broader method, see our game download times by internet speed guide. This GTA-specific page focuses on the announced PS5 preparation dates and the 212 GB storage guidance.
Use the speed your console actually receives
A 1 Gig home plan does not mean your console receives 1 Gbps throughout a download. Wi-Fi conditions, the console’s network hardware and the platform’s servers all matter. An internet speed test on a nearby phone is not a measurement of the console’s connection.
If the console averages 250 Mbps rather than the plan’s advertised 500 Mbps, double the ideal time in the 500 Mbps row. With an actual measured rate, you can also scale the estimate by file size: a download that turns out to be smaller than 212 GB should transfer sooner at the same sustained speed.
Prepare your PS5 before pre-load opens
- Confirm the preorder appears under the correct PlayStation account and check the edition’s download eligibility.
- Open Settings, then Storage, and make room based on the current official requirement. Allow for system updates and later patches rather than filling the drive to its last free gigabyte.
- Update the console’s system software.
- In the game library, select the preordered game and enable its auto-download option where available.
- If using rest mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet under the rest-mode features in the console’s power-saving settings.
- Check Downloads/Uploads after pre-load begins to confirm the transfer actually started.
Make a large download more predictable
Use Ethernet if practical, pause other large transfers and keep the console well ventilated. Avoid restarting a partially completed download as your first response to a slow estimate; that can discard useful progress. Check platform service status and whether the console is downloading, verifying or installing.
On a metered connection, check the current plan’s allowance and priority-data rules first. A large game transfer plus patches can consume a substantial portion of a monthly allowance. Rural households comparing Starlink, Viasat and Hughesnet should review the specific plan’s data and traffic-management terms rather than assuming every satellite service works the same way.
Do you need a new internet plan for one game?
Pre-loading can remove much of the pressure to finish in one evening. A slower stable connection may be sufficient if you start early. Faster service helps with transfers but does not make the game unlock before its release time, and a larger download tier alone does not guarantee lower online latency.
Use the console’s actual remaining size and current transfer rate once the download starts. Confirm Xbox dates and storage guidance separately; this page’s official 212 GB requirement was verified for PS5, not all platforms.
