Frontier Communications has agreed to pay Connecticut $625,000 over a 2024 data breach that exposed the Social Security numbers of tens of thousands of customers. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong announced the settlement on October 16, 2026. Frontier is now part of Verizon, so if you have Frontier internet, or ever applied for it, here's what the settlement means and what you should do to protect yourself.

What happened in the Frontier breach

Frontier detected the breach around April 14, 2024. According to the Connecticut Attorney General's office, a hacker used stolen login credentials belonging to Frontier employees and vendors to get into the company's internal IT systems and copy personal information that wasn't encrypted. The data, which included names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers of people who applied for Frontier residential service, was later offered for sale on the dark web. Frontier mailed breach notices around June 2024 with an offer of one year of free credit monitoring.

In Connecticut alone, 58,841 residents were affected. The state's investigation found security failures in how Frontier managed access, separated its systems, logged and monitored activity, encrypted data, responded to incidents and trained staff.

What the Connecticut settlement requires

Besides the $625,000 payment to the state, Frontier has to:

  • Run a comprehensive information security program that reports to its CEO
  • Use multi-factor authentication, encryption, stronger password management and access controls
  • Add logging and monitoring, penetration testing, data loss prevention and intrusion and endpoint detection
  • Keep an incident response plan and train employees on security
  • Get a third-party security assessment within one year and send the report to the Attorney General

The money goes to Connecticut, not to individual customers.

The nationwide class action and its deadline

Frontier separately settled a class action in federal court in Texas for $5.64 million, covering about 750,000 people nationwide who received a breach notice. Class members could claim a flat payment of about $100, or up to $5,000 for documented losses, plus two years of free credit monitoring. The claim deadline was October 27, 2025, so new claims are no longer accepted. If you filed a claim, your payment and credit monitoring come through the settlement administrator.

What Frontier and Verizon customers should do now

Stolen Social Security numbers don't expire, so even two years later these steps are worth taking if you got a breach notice:

  1. Freeze your credit at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. It's free and stops anyone from opening new credit in your name. You can lift it temporarily when you apply for a loan.
  2. Check your credit reports for accounts you don't recognize. You can get free reports from all three bureaus.
  3. Turn on multi-factor authentication for your Frontier or Verizon account, your email and your bank.
  4. Watch for phishing. Scammers use breach news to send fake "settlement" or "refund" messages. Frontier and Verizon won't ask for your Social Security number or password by text or email. Our guide to what phishing is shows the warning signs, and how to fight scam phone calls covers the phone side.
  5. Secure your home network with a strong router password and up-to-date firmware. Our guide on securing your home Wi-Fi network walks through it, and a password manager makes unique passwords easy.

Frontier is now Verizon

Verizon completed its purchase of Frontier in January 2026, and Frontier and Verizon both cooperated with Connecticut's investigation. Your Frontier internet service and plan aren't changed by this settlement.
