EarthLink vs. Spectrum: Compare the Service at Your Address

By RSINC editorial team | Updated

Compare the actual EarthLink and Spectrum offers for your home before choosing either company. The deciding factors are the connection delivered to the property, the full bill after any introductory offer, upload performance and the terms on the order. A provider's advertised starting price does not establish the price or technology available at your address.

Start with EarthLink's total-cost guide, the Spectrum provider guide and our explanation of Spectrum pricing after a promotion. Use the same installation address and unit number when requesting both quotes.

Identify the connection you are comparing

Ask EarthLink to identify the specific product, connection type and installation arrangement offered to you. Do not assume every EarthLink offer is fiber or that a nearby fiber installation makes your home eligible. Ask who handles installation, repairs, billing and equipment returns so you know which company to contact if something goes wrong.

Spectrum describes its internet network as fiber-powered with coaxial connections to the premises on its plans page. The product and speeds in the checkout for your property matter more than the general network description. Compare the actual download and upload figures on the Broadband Facts labels rather than comparing only plan names.

Compare the first year and the following year

Spectrum's public plans page reviewed October 30 lists introductory first-year prices for several speed tiers. Eligibility, included Wi-Fi equipment and later rates depend on the offer. This comparison does not turn those advertised promotions into an address quote. Ask for the monthly charge during the promotion, its end date and the charge afterward.

For either provider, add service, router rental, installation, activation and any optional products to the same worksheet. If a price requires automatic payment or another service, record that condition separately. A low headline price can be a poor comparison if the other quote includes equipment or if you do not want the required bundle.

Ask about the agreement before ordering

Check the exact EarthLink agreement for the product quoted, including any minimum term, early termination charge, installation arrangement and equipment obligations. Ask Spectrum for the same information. A new-customer advertisement is not a replacement for your order summary, and terms for one connection type may differ from another.

Choose for the work your household does

If several people upload files or make video calls, compare upload speed and typical latency. If the main use is streaming, check that the plan supports the household's simultaneous activity and that Wi-Fi reaches the rooms where it is used. Paying for a faster internet tier does not repair a weak Wi-Fi connection on its own.

Keep the switch practical

Confirm the installation appointment before canceling working service. Keep your old account information, photograph returned equipment and retain a receipt. After the new service starts, test with a wired computer and then with your usual Wi-Fi devices. If the quote includes a mobile bundle, review whether bundling internet and mobile fits your household before adding another line.
