CenturyLink vs Optimum: Which Internet Provider Is Better?

Updated

CenturyLink and Optimum only overlap in pockets — but where they do, the decision is really fiber versus cable (or fiber versus fiber). CenturyLink branding may mean slow DSL or a Quantum Fiber service. Optimum may mean cable today and fiber in the next neighborhood. Check the technology on the quote, not just the logo.

CenturyLink / Quantum Fiber pricing

On Quantum Fiber's deals page (October 5, 2026), advertised tiers include 500 Mbps for $50, 1 Gig for $50 (promotional discount off a higher regular rate with bank AutoPay), 2 Gig and 3 Gig for $70 in select markets, and 8 Gig for $165. There is no annual contract on those fiber offers.

If your address only qualifies for CenturyLink DSL, expect much lower speeds over copper. That product should not be compared with Optimum fiber or even Optimum cable as an equal. Related reading: Google Fiber vs CenturyLink Fiber and AT&T vs Quantum Fiber.

Optimum pricing

Optimum's current internet cards show 300 Mbps for $35, 500 Mbps for $45 and 1 Gig for $55 with Auto Pay and paperless billing discounts. Gateway pricing is often promotional at first, then can step up. Plans advertise no data caps and a 60-day money-back window. Some markets get true fiber; others stay on cable with slower uploads — ask which one your address receives.

How to choose where both appear

  1. Identify the tech. Quantum Fiber beats CenturyLink DSL. Optimum fiber beats Optimum cable on uploads.
  2. Compare uploads if you work from home or upload large files.
  3. Add equipment and Auto Pay rules to both quotes.
  4. Check brand transitions. Some former CenturyLink areas now bill as Brightspeed; see what changed with Brightspeed.

Which provider wins?

Pick Quantum Fiber / CenturyLink fiber when the quote is real fiber at a sharp gig price.

Pick Optimum when it offers fiber at your address with a better promo, or when CenturyLink only offers DSL.

Avoid CenturyLink DSL if any cable or fiber alternative reaches the property.

Which is faster, CenturyLink or Optimum?

If both offer fiber at your address, compare the fiber tiers directly. Optimum also sells cable plans with slower uploads. CenturyLink DSL is usually the slowest option of the three.

Which is cheaper?

It depends on the address. Quantum Fiber often shows 1 Gig near $50/mo with Autopay discounts for new customers, while Optimum promo cards recently show 300 Mbps from $35 and 1 Gig from $55 with Auto Pay. Always compare the quote for your ZIP.
