In a September 2026 interview with The New York Times, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that Canada plans to diversify away from SpaceX's Starlink. If you rely on a Starlink dish at home or at the cottage, here's what has actually been announced.

What Carney said

Carney talked about exploring other satellite internet options, including European ones, as part of reducing Canada's reliance on U.S. defence and technology. He pointed to sovereignty risks and to reports that Starlink limited service during the war in Ukraine.

What it doesn't mean

None of the sources we reviewed describe a ban on Starlink or any change to service for households. The comments are about government policy and procurement. Private subscribers can keep their service.

Who is competing for the business

Lobbying records reported by The Investigative Journalism Foundation in October 2026 show companies such as Xplore and Telesat meeting federal decision-makers this year. Telesat was also reported to have won a large Arctic military satellite contract.

Provinces are moving too

Ontario cancelled a $100 million Starlink contract in 2025 and has kept the termination payout confidential. Alberta, on the other hand, just opened a rebate program where Starlink is currently the listed eligible equipment.
