Starlink Satellite Roaming Rates Just Doubled
In 2023, Starlink introduced "Starlink Roam," a global satellite internet service designed to replace the previous "Starlink for RVs" service. The concept was born during the Covid-19 pandemic, aiming to provide subscribers with the flexibility to access the internet during getaways from congested areas and amid the migration from cities. The surge in RV sales during the pandemic validated the need for such a service.
In 2023 Starlink Roam cost $200 per month after purchasing the equipment for $599. In comparison, the standard Starlink service, which was restricted to the general location where the account was activated, cost about $100 per month. For about double the standard fee, subscribers could enjoy the freedom to take their internet connection anywhere within Starlink's coverage area.
The true value of Starlink Roam lies in its portability and global reach. Subscribers can move their equipment and maintain internet access wherever Starlink's signal is available. The Starlink website provides a list of these locations. However, a recent price increase to $400 per month has raised questions about the service's affordability and value, which largely depends on the subscriber's location and needs.
Unlike fiber optic, fixed wireless, and coaxial cable services, satellite internet does not rely exclusively on ground-based infrastructure. This allows satellite providers like Starlink to offer global coverage. However, regulatory hurdles exist. Several countries, such as Sudan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have not approved Starlink's operation, leading to service terminations. China also restricts the importation of telecom equipment and does not license Starlink. Additionally, U.S. sanctions prevent Starlink's licensing in some countries.
While Starlink's equipment is portable, subscribers must adhere to local regulations, which may require specific permissions or licenses to use satellite communication equipment. Unauthorized use to bypass local ISPs and government-controlled internet gateways can lead to legal consequences.
Moreover, some customers have used Starlink Roam equipment on boats to avoid the more expensive Maritime service. The significant price hike to $400 per month could deter such practices.
Starlink provides encrypted internet connections, enhancing privacy and security for users looking to avoid surveillance or censorship. However, the effectiveness of this depends on how local authorities respond to unauthorized satellite internet usage.
Given these global considerations, the price increase to $400 per month becomes more understandable. Starlink needs to cover the costs of obtaining regulatory approval in various countries and discourage misuse that violates local regulations.
New Starlink Roam subscribers will immediately face the $400 price, while existing subscribers will see the increase in mid-August 2024. This price hike comes at a challenging time for consumers dealing with high-interest mortgages, rising rent, insurance hikes, and higher energy bills. Starlink's strategy may now be to focus on more affluent subscribers who are less sensitive to price changes.
The standard Starlink subscription remains at $120 per month for regular service.
